Buila-Vânturarița National Park – a hike in the mountains

A walk in the Buila-Vânturarița National Park is ideal for those looking for this type of outdoor fun and relaxation. It is a route that can be done in a maximum of 4 hours, or even less if you have a little training. It is recommended to wear appropriate equipment to avoid the risk of injury.

Buila-Vânturarița National Park is a protected area in Romania, being the smallest national park with an area of 4186 ha. The park is located in the south of the Căpățănii Mountains, between Vârful Buila and Vânturarița Mare. The national park stands out for its floristic and faunal diversity. The national park was established in 2005.

In the Buila-Vânturariţa Massif you will find the following plant species:

  • – Rare species – Viola alpina – rock axe, Taxus baccata – yew, Lilium jankae – mountain lily, Lilium martagon – forest lily, Centaurea atropurpurea – cypress, Pinus mugo – juniper;
  • – endemic species: Centaurea pinnafida, Dianthus spiculifolius, Juniperus sabina.
  • – endangered species = species in danger of extinction whose survival is improbable if the causal factors continue to act or whose populations have been impoverished to a critical level (eg Leontopodium alpinum – the cornflower);
  • – vulnerable species: Trollius europaeus – mountain bulb, Dianthus spiculifolius, Daphne mezereum – dwarf tulichina, Daphne blagayana – white ivy);

The national park is also home to 28 species of orchids.

The fauna is as diverse as the flora. In Buila-Vânturarița National Park, we meet reptiles (lizard, wall lizard, brown snake, viper), mammals (horseshoe bat, typical bat, pond bat, black Capra, deer, badger, stone marten, forest marten, bear, lynx, wolf, etc. Tourists fond of birds can also admire the little screaming eagle, the red jay, the mountain woodpecker, the owl, the oak woodpecker, the black stoner, the mountain thrush, the evening tern or the mountain grouse.

It is very easy to reach by car, the simplest route being from the national road DN67 (Târgu Jiu-Râmnicu Vâlcea). The main access routes are through the localities of Bistriţa (Vâlcea County), Băile Olăneşti, Bărbăteşti, Pietreni and Cheia (Vâlcea County).

Also, if you are in the area, you can visit Horezu, the pottery city. If you go on a day trip to Horezu, don’t miss another chance to see the only place in Romania where natural silk is obtained, but it is also woven, found in Vâlcea County, in the village of Stoenești.
