The vineyards of Drăgășani – enter the lands full of flavor

The vineyards in Drăgășani are among the oldest in the country, dating back to the time of the Geto-Dacians, over 2000 years ago. According to some legends circulating in this area, the names of two varieties of vines, Braghină and Gordan, cultivated on the lands of Drăgășani, have an exciting and captivating history. The name “Braghina” comes from “Bagrina,” the name of one of the daughters of King Burebista, by whose order the vineyards were cleared. The name “Gordan” comes from a Dacian fighter who took his strength from drinking wine.

Over time, the vineyards in Drăgășani had several owners from boyar families, such as those of Ban Buzescu, Ban Ghica, princes Bibescu and Știrbei, and the boyar Iancu jianu from Romanați owned “Via Foișor”. Moreover, these vineyards were a refuge for several boyar families in Craiova during the Turkish invasions.

Below we will present the vineyards that you can visit if you are in Drăgășani:

Bauer Winery – Bauer winery was founded in 2021 and is located in the center of Drăgășani Vineyard. This winery was established to allow the vinification of small quantities of grapes from rare varieties not yet discovered by wine enthusiasts. The winery is open to visitors all year round, being an excellent location for those who want to taste a glass of wine from various varieties.

Avincis Winery – this winery was opened in 2007 and is located on the family estate Vila Dobrușa, in the region of the sub-Carpathian hills. The winery was developed by two lawyers who wanted to bring back the vineyard’s success in the area. The estate stands out for its modern architecture, where you can participate in exclusive events and wine tastings.

Stirbey Winery – the well-known princely family Știrbey owned a wine estate in the Drăgășani vineyard over 300 years ago. The heiress of the family, Baroness Ileana Kripp-Costinescu, and her husband, Jakob Kripp, of Austrian origin, wanted to bring back the old charm of this place. Here wines are produced according to specific standards and kept from generation to generation. All who step on this beautiful territory can enjoy pure variety wines.

The fertile lands (the dominant soils in the vineyard are clays, with traces of limestone, sand, gravel, and, rarely, marl) and the temperate continental climate contributed to the development of the vineyards. Also, along the Olt valley, the vineyards in the region have developed harmoniously due to the proper humidity, especially in the hot summer months. The wine varieties grown in this area are Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Italian Riesling, Pinot Gris, Fetească alba, Fetească regală (for white wines); Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Merlot (for red wines) and Tămâioasa românească (for aromatic wines). Also, the Wine Research Station introduced new varieties: Selected crampos, a replica of the old Crampos (for white wines), Novac and Negru de Drăgășani (for red wines), Victoria (valuable variety for table grapes, spread on many meridians of the globe), Azur (a black combination for table grapes), Călina (variety for raisins).

The vineyards in these places made the city of Drăgășani famous in the country. The main occupation of the locals was the cultivation of vines. With its famous vineyards, the town of vineyards has gained popularity among wine tasters. In the village of Drăgășani, the Museum of Vine and Wine was arranged in 1974, where you can find out more about the vineyards in the area.
